Clavichord tangents in brass for Morley clavichords - £3.40 each
diameter 3.95mm x length 31.8mm
A clavichord tangent is a small brass blade or narrow edge which is attached to the back of the key that strikes the metal strings to make the sound. When you press the key, the tangent rises to hit the string, whilst your finger is holding the key down the tangent remains in contact with the string. The direct contact of the tangent to the string allows you to control the volume, the harder the key is pressed the louder and the gentler the softer. Bebung is created by subtle changing of the pressure making a vibrato sound.
Please note that no clavichords are "loud", they are a gentle quiet tone but do have varying degrees of sound, (loud soft and soft soft).
